Abstract: In the last decades, in Italy and abroad, urban studies have tried to write down the history of women's way of inhabiting places: this isn't a simple task, because traces of women's presence are often difficult to
discover and to interpret. This is partly due to one of the main features of the way women inhabit spaces: the importance of building up relationships among women and within the family, starting from the very materiality of bodies. Each time in history
women have been allowed to have a space of their own, they always opened it up to the others, combining private and social life, home and city, what lies near and what lies far. Women's ways to inhabit spaces have therefore been characterised by a
thorough understanding of the plurality of ways of life. This in turn leads to the acceptance of differences, which is the base on which lies all the way women inhabit and project places: the attention to the different paths along which bodies move in
